The Need for Antioxidants
YES, you need antioxidants!
Anti-oxidants help counter free radical damage from stressors to the body. These oxidative stressors come from sources such as the by-products of normal body functioning, toxins from the environment such as pesticides, heavy metals, chemicals, food additives and medications. As we age, our ability to generate anti-oxidants in the body decreases and we are more susceptible to cellular damage which can potentially lead to issues such as cancers, Alzheimers disease, dementia, autoimmune diseases, and many other symptoms.
Chemicals and toxins are everywhere in our environment including our air, water, food, and products we out in and on our bodies. Without anti-oxidants, out body cannot bind these toxins and excrete them causing them to build up and cause damage in the body. People all over the world who are concerned with health and longevity take anti-oxidants to help counteract aging and promote optimal wellness.
Bariatric surgery patients have multiple reasons why anti-oxidants are highly recommended.
- The intake of fruits and vegetables where anti-oxidants are the most prevalent is significantly decreased after weight loss surgery which provides restriction and strict diet protocols.
- Weight loss is a detoxification process. Toxins are stored in fat, and in weight loss, when fat is being converted, these toxins are being released into the body, causing a high need for anti-oxidants to bind to them for excretion and to decrease their toxicity and prevent them from causing tissue damage and disease.
- Many patients who have bariatric surgery have medical problems as a result of their obesity that create oxidative damage to the body. Diabetes and sleep apnea are hugely damaging to the body. Many medications are also damaging to the body. Taking specific anti-oxidants that are proven to science to counteract this damage will help prevent disease, reverse aging, and improve overall health and well-being.
Building Blocks Anti-ox includes high quality compounds such as:
Vitamin A- regulates growth and division of cells. Helps increase immune health by aiding in the production of white blood cells to fight illness or infection. Plays role in remodeling bone. Protects against certain cancers. Protect eyes and vision. Reduces acne.
Vitamin C- helps to repair and regenerate tissues, promote healthy blood vessels. Can not be made in the body, must come from external sources.
Selenium- critical nutrient for production of glutathione and thyroid hormone. Powerful anti-oxidant to prevent cell damage. May reduce risk of cancer, protect against heart disease, prevent mental decline.
Vitamin E- anti-oxidant that can not be made in the body, must come from food and/or supplement. Reduces oxidative stress and neutralizing harmful molecules (free radicals)
Ellagic acid (from pomegranate fruit extract)- neutralizes cancer causing chemicals preventing them from damaging DNA.
CO-Q-10- critical co-factor for cellular energy production to fuel mitochondria for optimal all body systems function. Helps reduce headaches, body aches, fatigue, inflammation. Decreases risk of heart disease, gingivitis, fights cognitive decline.
Glutathione- the most important antioxidant and detoxifying molecule in the body which helps with oxidative stress, solvents, pesticides, steroids, and heavy metals. It also helps to recycle other antioxidants in the body.
Alpha lipoic acid- aids in using blood sugar for energy, anti-oxidant for fats and water soluble substances (making it excellent for nerves and neurological inflammation), reduces arterial inflammation, penetrates blood brain barrier, helps liver detoxification, chelates and removes heavy metal toxins, and recycles glutathione (the master anti-oxidant) for ongoing use
N-Acetyl Cysteine- essential for making and recycling glutathione, improves respiratory health, liver and kidney health, improve mental health conditions, stabilize blood sugar, support neurologic symptoms.
